Minutes of the June 2, 2009 Sipsey Wilderness Hiking Club regular monthly meeting held at the Bernice Hilton Walker Building in Double Springs

In attendance were: Gary, Foster, Anthony, Jennifer, Larry, Mimi, Shelby, and  Doris.

Chairman Gary White called the meeting to order promptly at 7 PM.  The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved and a brief treasurer’s report presented.

Old business.

Gary reported on the outing to Monte Santo State Park.  He and Bart attended and although the weather proved unsatisfactory for hiking, they had an enjoyable trip.

Due to the “no reservations” policy due to campground construction, the Fall Creek Falls June outing to Tennessee was canceled.

Mimi confirmed that she has reserved the pavilion at the Houston Recreation Area for our July picnic.  It was decided that there will be optional camping overnight on Friday and Saturday.

New business.

Mimi phoned the National Park Service to inquire about reservations for Cataloochee in North Carolina.  They informed us that they only take reservations for group camping.  Foster remarked unfavorably on the group campsites.

There was more enthusiasm for our August outing over the weekend of August 14-16.  Suggested sites included Standing Indian Campground and the Nantahala Adventure Resort in North Carolina and somewhere along the Cherohala Skyway in Tennessee.  Gary and others will look into camping options at high elevations along that route and we will decide at the next meeting.

There was some discussion centered around the club’s emails and how best to reply to them.  We seem to be doing all right so far.

Doris who provided our refreshments also won the door prize, a Leave No Trace insulated coffee mug.

The meeting adjourned shortly before 8 PM.
