Minutes of the May 6, 2008 Sipsey Wilderness Hiking Club regular monthly meeting held at the Bernice Hilton Walker Building in Double Springs

In attendance were: Gary, Mike, Bart, Danny, Larry, Mimi, Gina, Foster, Anthony, Jennifer; guest speaker Mark Kolinski from Wild South.

Chairman Gary White called the meeting to order shortly after 7 PM.  In the interest of allowing more time for our speaker, the business meeting was abbreviated to one item of new business.

New business.  Larry made a motion that the club become a $50 sponsor for the 3rd Annual Smith Lake Clean-up in June.  Foster seconded the motion and it was approved unanimously.

Mark Kolinski is Wild South’s Staff Forester and Canyon Mapper.  His excellent presentation began with the history of Wild South including its previously adversarial relationship with the Forest Service.  We were treated to slides taken as part of his work mapping the canyons of the Bankhead National Forest.  His collection of arborglyphs was particularly intriguing.  Mark kept us grandly entertained with tales and images of old stills, unusual trees and plants, and ancient cultural sites and modern day looting.

The meeting adjourned after 9 PM.
