Minutes of the February 5, 2008 Sipsey Wilderness Hiking Club regular monthly meeting held at the Bernice Hilton Walker Building in Double Springs

In attendance were: Gary, Mike, Danny, Foster, Scott, Larry, and Mimi.

Chairman Gary White called the meeting to order shortly after 7 PM.  The minutes were read and approved.

Old business. Gary will contact Bart as to the status of the plaque for T&F.

Mike reported that Wild South is interested in meeting with us for preliminary discussions concerning a proposed new trail.  The date will be determined.

The 2007 award for most trail maintenance volunteer hours was presented to Gary White.  Gary contributed 87 hours in 2007.

The February 9 work day will commence from the south end.  We will endeavor to repair some damaged sections of the trail bed.  Gary will bring pulaskis and fire rakes.

New business.  Larry presented information about the March 1-14 Feral Hog Hunt in the Bankhead.  As a result, we decided to reschedule the March 8 work day to March 22.

Larry also reported on email concerning directions to waterfalls, Alabama Hiking Trails Society events, and summarized the Bankhead National Forest Liaison Panel meeting, with special credit going to Mike who gave the panel an excellent presentation concerning our club and our volunteer efforts on the Mitchell Ridge Trail.

The schedule for providing refreshments for the club meetings was established: Mimi for March, Foster for April, Danny for May.

For the February 16 day hike, Larry and Mimi will meet people at Jack’s.  Foster reminded us that these hikes need to be considered at the same level of importance as our trail maintenance.

The meeting closed with a slide show and videos from Danny and Scotty’s August hiking trip to Glacier National Park.  Everyone enjoyed the images and their stories.

The meeting adjourned shortly after 8 PM.
