The Sipsey Wilderness Hiking Club will be meeting for a weekend of
car camping and exploring caves
in northeastern Alabama (think Scottsboro)
over the weekend, Friday - Sunday, June 22 - 24.
Our focal point for the weekend will be Cathedral Caverns State Park
where primitive camping is available at $13 per night. On Saturday, we will
take the cave tour which is also $13.
Either before or after the tour, we will drive and hike to
another cave at Stephens Gap where there are opportunities for
rappelling should anyone be so inclined. Even though the hike is only about one
mile, you will want to bring hiking boots, especially if it has been raining.
We will visit the caves on Saturday, the 23rd. We will meet up at
the park office at 9 AM. We will decide in what order to do
these things at that time, weather and turnout being the deciding factors.
Please note that this area is not much more than a two hour drive from Double
Springs so this outing is certainly doable as a day trip.
For more information and directions to Cathedral Caverns, see the
park website.
A web search for "Stephens Gap Cave Alabama" will steer you towards photos and
trip reports about Stephens Gap.
